A Different Attention: Gestures in Spiritual Direction

We often think of spiritual direction as an interplay between words and silence, but words and silence are not the only communicative registers connecting the director, the directee, and God. Hands also connect us. Eyes. Tears. In this workshop, we’ll examine a handful of the bodily gestures–various gesticulations of the hand, dartings of the eye, tiltings of the head–that both directors and directees employ, often unconsciously. We will consider:
*how these gestures surface in the Bible
*what current-day social science suggests about what various gestures reveal about the gesture
*what gestures we might want to intentionally adopt as part of our direction practice
*how we can receive gestures as part and parcel of the communing that occurs in spiritual direction
If you plan to attend the workshop and you have the attention-space to do so between now and then, please begin to notice gestures around you – both in direction, and in the rest of life.
